Toronto—February 8, 2022— Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) is proud to be named one of BC’s Top Employers for the third consecutive year by Mediacorp Canada Inc., organizers of the annual Canada's Top 100 Employers project.
Amazon currently has more than 10,000 full-and part-time employees in British Columbia, with 3,500 at its Vancouver Tech Hub and 6,500 across its local Operations network, which includes four fulfilment centres, six delivery stations, and a sortation centre. BC’s Top Employers are selected based on eight criteria that evaluate Physical Workplace; Work Atmosphere & Social; Health, Financial & Family Benefits; Vacation & Time Off; Employee Communications; Performance Management; Training & Skills Development; and Community Involvement.
“For somebody who loves to build, invent and be part of a high-performance team that delivers exceptional products and services to customers, Amazon is an exciting place to work. If you have a good idea, you are empowered to make it happen. As we continue to invest in creating good jobs in BC, it is a tremendous honour to be recognized as one of the province’s best employers,” said Jesse Dougherty, Amazon VP.
"Amazon has the mission to become Earth’s Best Employer and Earth’s Safest Place to Work, and the health and safety of employees has been our top priority since day one. We are proud that our commitment to employee wellness and career development is once again recognized for meeting the highest standards,” said Sumegha Kumar, Director of Canadian Customer Fulfillment Operations, Amazon.
In 2021, Amazon launched two programs that provide employees with comprehensive physical and emotional support to improve their wellbeing at work and home: WorkingWell and MyWellbeing.
WorkingWell is a comprehensive program providing employees with scientifically proven physical and mental activities, wellness exercises, and healthy eating support, designed to help them recharge, reenergize, and ultimately reduce the risk of injury. The program was part of the company's investment of more than $300 million (USD) into safety projects across North America in 2021.
MyWellbeing is a best-in-class digital resource providing employees with a single point of access to a range of physical, mental, social and financial care providers. Through the platform, Amazon employees can use their mobile devices or computers to access exclusive virtual physiotherapy sessions, a virtual gym, mental health support, mindfulness sessions and more, further strengthening their health and wellbeing.
Amazon provides full-time operations employees with access to educational opportunities through upskilling programs like Career Choice, an initiative that sees the company pre-pay up to 95 per cent of tuition for courses related to in-demand fields. Full-time employees also receive competitive benefits, including hourly wages above those of standard entry-level jobs, between $17 and $21.65 an hour; medical, vision and dental coverage; a group RRSP plan; and stock awards, starting on day one.
Amazon’s impact also extends to the broader community. In 2020, Amazon donated more than $10 million (CAD) to Canadian charities focused on "Right Now Needs" (such as food, shelter, and basic goods for children and families) and computer science education for underserved and underrepresented students. In 2021, Amazon supported local causes including Backpack Buddies, the Greater Vancouver Food Bank, YMCA Greater Vancouver, and Dress for Success Vancouver. Amazon also committed $500,000 (CAD) to the Canadian Red Cross to help individuals and communities affected by the flooding and extreme weather in BC. Thanks to the generous matching program announced by the federal and BC provincial governments, the donation totaled $1.5 million (CAD), and directly supports the Canadian Red Cross’ efforts to provide humanitarian assistance in affected areas. In addition to the cash donation, the Amazon disaster relief and response team partnered with local community organizations to support on-the-ground relief efforts by donating more than 62,000 items—including dehumidifiers, cases of diapers, hygiene supplies, food, and cleaning materials.
