BANGKOK—May 4, 2023—Amazon Web Services (AWS), an Amazon.com company, today announced that Charoen Pokphand Foods Public Company Limited (CP Foods), a Thai agri-industrial and food conglomerate, is a digitally transforming, powered by AWS. Working through AXONS, a CP Foods agri-tech company, AWS was selected as its cloud service provider. AXONS will migrate CP Foods’ SAP environment in Thailand to AWS and implement a modern SAP S/4HANA platform to improve operations. By migrating business-critical SAP workloadson AWS, CP Food strives to become a data-driven business with the agility to enhance the customer experience, unlock supply chain efficiencies, and innovate new business models.

Using AWS, AXONS built new services for CP Foods such as a digital food-ordering and analytics applications. These services allow data-driven decision making and provide faster access to credit for smaller retailers. To further accelerate its digital transformation, AXONS plans to close CP Foods’ on-premises data centers in Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam, and migrate additional mission-critical applications, including farm management solutions, to AWS. AWS helps CP Foods scale workloads tenfold to address 7.5% annual customer growth in Thailand’s retail sector while reducing operational resources by more than 20%.

CP Foods modernizes with AWS and SAP
Previously, CP Foods’ fragmented on-premises infrastructure could not scale to meet the rapid expansion of the company’s operations across more than 17 countries. In 2020, CP Foods started its migration of SAP Business Warehouse, SAP Business Planning and Consolidation, and SAP Business Intelligence solutions to the cloud. This year, AXONS successfully migrated the SAP environment for CP Foods’ subsidiaries—including CP Meiji, CP Merchandising, and overseas operations—to AWS. Using AWS’ compute, database, and container services to modernize its enterprise resource planning (ERP) system, CP Foods can connect data across its operations, including supply chains, processing plants, and fulfilment centers. Greater operational visibility enables CP Foods to gain more insights into sales performance and retailer credit worthiness, to improve sales. Looking forward, this SAP transformation will enable the food supplier to integrate advanced AWS capabilities like analytics and machine learning to further drive efficiencies and improve customer service.

CP Foods’ SAP modernization drive is helping the company solve meaningful customer challenges rapidly and innovatively. For example, the CP Foods launched an application on a Line (a freeware instant communications app for mobile devices) Official Account (OA) named “Talad Sod” (Talad Sod means wet market in Thai). This application helps small retailers such as family-owned stalls and neighborhood kiosks that generally lack access to advanced accounting and analysis tools, to manage inventory, boost sales, and increase profitability. Retailers use Line OA “Talad Sod” to order from CP Foods and access free data analytics previously reserved for large supermarkets. In addition to insights on stocks and sales, Line OA “Talad Sod” predicts demand and makes suggestions for appropriate stock levels to maximize sales. Line OA “Talad Sod” also empowers retailers by providing electronic payment services and instant digital credit to resupply immediately, further accelerating sales.

To equip employees with cloud skills, CP Food’s AXONS is working with AWS on a broad skills-enablement program to promote rapid and continuous learning at CP Foods, driving digital transformation across the company. This year, CP Foods plans to train 20,000 employees in basic digital skills, and 100 technical and non-technical staff have completed the AWS Cloud Practitioner Essentials course. AXONS will enroll staff from its infrastructure and developer teams in classroom-led courses about AWS cloud architecture, containers, and security.

"CP Foods’ SAP migration to AWS is helping the company and its retailers improve their operations across the region,” said Sunsern Samaisut, managing director and executif AXONS. “With the agility and scalability of AWS, we can develop new products and services for CP Foods faster and increase customer satisfaction. Free access to advanced cloud capabilities like data analytics means family-owned stores can run their businesses more efficiently and profitably, better serving Thailand’s population with the foods they love.”

“Cloud technology is transforming the food industry, improving supply chains, and driving growth across diverse businesses,” said Vatsun Thirapatarapong, country manager at AWS Thailand. “By running SAP on AWS, AXONS has established a strong foundation for CP Foods to drive efficiencies throughout its operations, gather new insights, and make data-driven decisions. In addition, CP Foods is using AWS to support its global expansion and develop improved customer services at scale while creating additional financial opportunity for smaller retailers.”
