Amazon today marked five years of operations at its 600-acre Amazon Air Hub, the company's largest field operation in the world. Since launching on August 5, 2021, the hub has created more than 4,000 local jobs, processed more than 1.5 billion packages, and operated more than three dozen daily flights as the flagship of Amazon's global air network. Every piece of ground support equipment on the ramp runs on electric power, supporting Amazon's Climate Pledge commitment to reach net-zero carbon by 2040.
In addition to celebrating associates, the site hosted Amazon Air leaders and community partners for an outdoor ceremony featuring live music, workforce festivities, and a donation unveiling.
"Five years ago, we opened this facility with a bold vision to build the most advanced air cargo operation in the world right here in Northern Kentucky," said Mike Berg, Amazon Director of Operations. "What I'm most proud of is that we haven't just created thousands of jobs. We've created pathways. More than 1,340 of our employees are enrolled in Career Choice right now, earning degrees and certifications fully funded by Amazon. When someone walks across that graduation stage, that's what this investment is really about."
Economic and Community Impact
For the first time, Amazon is publicly sharing the full scope of its economic investment in the region. Since 2010, the company has invested over $30 billion in Boone County, Kentucky, contributed over $20 billion to the local economy, and supported 17,000 indirect jobs.
Amazon also announced $100,000 in donations to local nonprofits as part of today’s celebration, including $50,000 to the Life Learning Center, which provides second-chance employment opportunities to individuals facing barriers to the workforce. An additional $50,000 is distributed among 10 regional organizations — the Ion Center, the DCCH Center for Children and Families, GO Pantry, Crayons and Beyond, Northern Kentucky Harvest, Adopt a Class, the Alliance of Therapy Dogs, Kentucky Homeland Heroes, the Emergency Shelter of Northern Kentucky, and Mental Health America of Northern Kentucky. This brings Amazon's total community contributions in the region to more than $1.5 million since 2021.
Workforce Development
Amazon's Career Choice program pre-pays tuition for college, certifications, and technical training to eligible front-line employees. More than 1,340 employees – over 30% of the workforce at the Air Hub – are currently enrolled, with participation up over 100% year-over-year. Since 2019, Amazon has upskilled more than 4,000 employees across Kentucky.
Also celebrating today: 234 associates are marking their own five-year anniversary, having helped launch the facility on day one.
