BANGKOK—May 4, 2023—Amazon Web Services (AWS), an Amazon.com company, today announced that PTT Global Chemical Public Company Limited (PTTGC), Thailand’s largest fully integrated petrochemical and refinery business, has selected AWS as the preferred cloud provider for its data platform. PTTGC’s teams use this platform to collaborate and securely share data worldwide to prototype new products, including a solution that calculates the shelf life of raw materials in just days rather than months.

PTTGC uses AWS services such as Amazon SageMaker and AWS Redshift to help monitor chemical plants and optimize production lines to reduce raw-material consumption. These efforts helped PTTGC earn the No. 1 global ranking in the chemicals sector of the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices (DJSI) for four consecutive years.

PTTGC’s operational data across the group used to reside in disparate silos, which hindered collaboration and product innovation. The company therefore sought a scalable environment to experiment and aggregate data to drive its innovation and sustainability initiatives. PTTGC first built a data lake using Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3), creating a centralized repository to store PTTGC data. The data lake allows PTTGC scientists to share data and rapidly develop new compounds and products, such as the Bisphenol A (BPA) Catalyst Life Prediction solution. These BPA Catalysts, which increase the rate of chemical reactions, improve the yield and quality of fuel. The BPA Catalyst Life Prediction solution analyzes the environmental conditions that impact a catalyst, including temperature and humidity, and determine the optimal conditions to extend its shelf life, while saving petrochemical production costs.

PTTGC also uses Amazon Redshift, a fully managed, petabyte-scale data warehouse service in the cloud, to create a global dashboard for visualizing production information from their data lake, including machine cycles and raw-material stocks. This dashboard provides real-time visibility into manufacturing processes, helping PTTGC reduce polymer waste. With Amazon SageMaker, a fully managed machine learning service, to build, train, and deploy machine learning models, PTTGC can forecast price volatility of raw materials and predict required inventory levels to lower storage costs. PTTGC also built the YOUTURN recycling app on AWS to encourage the public to recycle plastic products.

“AWS enables us to use our data to rapidly develop innovative new solutions that help our customers thrive,” said Nattapol Jongjatoonkiat, head of digital transformation at PTT Global Chemical Public Company Limited. “Using AWS, our cloud data platform is highly agile and scalable, allowing us to save costs and lower energy consumption while reducing our time-to-market from months to days. Machine learning enables us to easily reduce raw-material waste and make our operations more sustainable.”

“Large manufacturing customers across Southeast Asia increasingly use cloud technology to become more efficient, and innovative. They are also expecting cloud to play a larger role in helping them achieve their sustainability goals,” said Vatsun Thirapatarapong, country manager for AWS in Thailand. “By hosting its data platform on AWS, PTT Global Chemical is improving collaboration across the company by giving secure teams access to centralized data and compute power in the cloud.”
