HANOI, VIETNAM, 29 SEP, 2026 — VTV Digital, a subsidiary of Vietnam Television, and the owner of VTVgo, the national Over-The-Top (OTT) platform of Vietnam, today shared how it successfully streamed its first high-definition, multi-language coverage of a major 2026 international sports tournament to over 22 million viewers across Vietnam using Amazon Web Services (AWS).
A new viewing experience for Vietnamese audiences
With AWS, VTV Digital introduced a premium viewing tier offering full HD 1080p streams, video-on-demand playback, match and player highlights, and a choice of Northern-tone, Southern-tone, original feed or English commentary, a first for VTV Digital. The premium experience attracted over 600,000 net-new subscriptions during the tournament. Free tier viewers continued to receive up to 720p coverage.
"VTVgo had a vision to deliver a world class experience for Vietnamese viewers watching sports by leveraging AWS Cloud. With AWS, we gave Vietnamese viewers something they had never had before: the ability to choose how they watch, multi-language support, and full HD on-demand replays. Over 600,000 viewers chose to subscribe to our premium tier during the tournament, which tells us the demand for high-quality digital sports is real and growing. AWS gave us confidence to handle peak demand reliably, so we could focus on what matters most: serving our audience,” said Pham Anh Chien, Director of VTV Digital.
Reliable delivery at national scale
AWS Cloud enabled VTV Digital to handle massive surges without impacting viewers. During peak moments, the system processed over 704,000 requests per second and delivered approximately 1.41Tbps of bandwidth — enough to simultaneously stream HD video to every viewer with no noticeable issues. On the busiest day, the service delivered over 5.7 petabytes of content — roughly equivalent to streaming over 1.9 million full-length HD movies in a single day — representing a 533-times increase over VTV Digital's average daily traffic.
Amazon CloudFront delivered up to 70% of VTV Digital's total streaming traffic throughout the tournament, routing content through servers embedded directly within Vietnam's four major internet service providers so viewers experienced faster load times and smoother playback.
VTV Digital built its end-to-end streaming workflow on AWS Cloud, from capturing the live broadcast signal through delivery to viewer’s screens:
- AWS Elemental MediaLive Anywhere encoded live contribution feeds on-premises at VTV's broadcast facility
- AWS Elemental MediaConnect transported contribution streams securely and reliably to the AWS cloud via SRT protocol
- AWS Elemental MediaLive transcoded the contribution feed into adaptive bitrate renditions for all screen sizes and network conditions
- AWS Elemental MediaPackage packaged content into HLS format for streaming delivery
- Amazon CloudFront delivered streams to viewers across Vietnam with low-latency HLS
- AWS WAF protected streams from unauthorized access and geo-restricted viewing outside Vietnam
"VTV Digital's ability to stream to millions of viewers is an example of how cloud infrastructure can support live events at national scale. By running their end-to-end streaming workflow on AWS, from on-premises encoding through to content delivery, VTV Digital was able to scale with demand and deliver a consistent viewing experience to millions of fans across Vietnam,” said Eric Yeo, Country General Manager for AWS Vietnam.
Supporting the AFF Cup and beyond
Following the tournament, VTV Digital continued to use the same AWS-based infrastructure to stream the ASEAN Championship (AFF Cup), with plans to expand its use of AWS across additional live content and channels on the VTV Digital platform.
VTV Digital sees the success of its tournament coverage as a foundation for the next phase of its digital transformation. The platform plans to expand its use of AWS to power year-round live and on-demand content, including entertainment, news, and additional sports programs. By building on cloud-based infrastructure, VTV Digital aims to bring Vietnamese audiences personalized, higher-quality viewing experiences across all devices, while scaling efficiently as its subscriber base grows.
