LONDON April 29 2005: Anne Bancroft who played 'Mrs Robinson', the student-seducing mother in classic film The Graduate, has been voted the most 'Desperate Movie Housewife' in a survey of celluloid-devotees.
8,000 film fans voted in the Amazon.co.uk and Internet Movie Database (IMDb.com) poll, and Anne Bancroft, clinched a quarter of the votes (25.1%) with her portrayal of the middle-aged temptress who proved herself to be totally irresistible to college student 'Ben' played by Dustin Hoffman.
Mrs Robinson's allure beat off competition from the ultimate list of silver screen Desperate Housewives, including Diane Lane (Unfaithful), Nicole Kidman (The Stepford Wives) and Meryl Streep (The Bridges of Madison County).
Catherine Zeta-Jones was the only Brit actress to make the list, at 7th place in the poll, for her portrait of a housewife who would do anything to keep her materialistic life on track in 'Traffic'.
Duncan Thomson, DVD Editor at Amazon.co.uk comments: "With all the hype around the small screen Desperate Housewives, we thought it would be interesting to see who movie fans really feel were the ultimate 'Desperate Movie Housewives'. Thirty-eight years after its release, The Graduate with Anne Bancroft's powerful performance still resonates with fans of great film who love knowing what really takes place behind the white picket fences!"
