Cyber Monday (5th December) is peak day in Amazon.co.uk's biggest ever week
£89 Kindle is best selling product on Cyber Monday amassing its highest one-day sales on Amazon.co.uk
December 11, 2011:
11th December 2011 – Amazon.co.uk today revealed that it took orders for over 3 million items on 5th December - 'Cyber Monday' - the most items ordered in a single day on record. Last year on its busiest day, Amazon.co.uk took orders for over 2.3 million items.
'Cyber Monday' was the peak day during Amazon.co.uk's busiest ever week. Amazon's £89 e-reader, Kindle, was the best selling product on 'Cyber Monday' amassing its highest ever one-day sales.
"History tells us that the busiest online shopping day is the first Monday in December and this year has followed that trend," said Christopher North, Managing Director, Amazon.co.uk Ltd. "This year, Cyber Monday saw the most items ever ordered in a single day with Kindle being the standout product that looks set to appear under the most Christmas trees this festive season."
"Although Monday remains the busiest day of the week, we are seeing the other days closing the gap," continued Christopher North. "This is as a result of greater access to the internet via home broadband and mobile devices meaning that people can shop whenever and wherever they want."
Amazon.co.uk continues to take orders in the run up to Christmas and customers have until the end of the day on Sunday 18th December to take advantage of UK Free Super Saver Delivery in time for Christmas. Other last order dates for UK Christmas delivery include: First Class on 21st December, Express Delivery on 23rd December, and Evening Delivery (orders to be placed by 8.30am) on 24th December. Amazon Prime members can order as late as 6pm on December 23rd for free one-day delivery.
"Although many people will have started, and in some cases finished, their Christmas shopping, we do see customers ordering right up until the last minute and that's why we have our Evening Delivery service on Christmas Eve," said Christopher North. "And we can always gift wrap that last-minute item if required, ensuring that the present arrives on time and looks great too."
The total of over 3 million items ordered does not include free Kindle books or Amazon MP3 downloads and if it did, the number would be even higher.
