LONDON – 9th November 2017 – To mark 10 years of Amazon Prime in the UK, Amazon has revealed the greatest hits and highlights of Prime over the last decade with Adele’s album “25”, the Fire TV Stick, the Frozen DVD and Cards Against Humanity amongst the most purchased items through One-Day Delivery in the last 10 years. Prime members have been saving time and money on fast unlimited delivery every day since launch.
Prime has revolutionised home delivery for millions of households across the UK and, to celebrate the milestone and thank some of its most loyal customers, Amazon has identified 10 small UK villages “Prime Villages” and is giving all households Prime membership for a year. The 10 villages, whose residents have been amongst the most frequent Amazon customers over the past decade, will receive Prime membership for one year including existing Prime members, who will receive 12 months on top of their current subscription. Select households will also be chosen at random to receive a trip to London and a pair of exclusive Amazon Lounge tickets to a popular show at The O2, courtesy of Amazon Tickets.

Residents in the 10 “Prime Villages” – which include Daresbury, Kirkton of Tough and Marloes – are already making the most of Prime, with Amazon customers in these locations more likely to be Prime members than the UK average.
“We’re thrilled to be giving Prime membership to these residents, who are some of our most loyal Amazon customers,” said Doug Gurr, UK Country Manager, Amazon. “It’s our pleasure to reward those who are already members with 12 additional months on us, and for those that haven’t yet tried Prime we hope they will enjoy a chance to experience all the great benefits that come with it.”

Households in the following 10 villages are this week receiving a unique code to unlock their free one year Prime membership:

  • Calvert Green, Buckinghamshire
  • Churchover, Warwickshire
  • Daresbury, Cheshire
  • Garvald and Bara, East Lothian
  • Holwell, Hertfordshire
  • Kirkton of Tough, Aberdeenshire
  • Llanwern, Newport
  • Marloes and St. Brides, Pembrokeshire
  • Roughfort, County Antrim
  • Rubane, County Down

Nick Harrison Jones from Holwell, said: “I was a teacher for 30 years but I’ve been an artist all my life. As a painter I specialise in using mixed-media techniques and, living in a rural area, I’ve been using Amazon Prime since 2010 to buy my materials. I have bought everything from art books and brushes to paints that I just wouldn’t be able to get hold of without driving a really long way. In a way, you could say that Amazon Prime has fuelled my passion.”

“We moved to Marloes – one of Amazon’s Prime Villages - two and a half years ago and the fast next day delivery with Amazon Prime has been invaluable to us,” said Paul Lucas a resident of Marloes who runs the village Café. “We’ve used Prime to order everything from sports equipment and tools to an oven for our new café kitchen. To be able to get such a wide selection of items delivered the next day at the touch of a button has saved us so much time. It’s really made it so much easier to set up home out here in this beautiful, rural location.”

Boosting rural business
In addition to rural customers benefitting from access to the same innovative content and services as people in urban areas through Prime, rural businesses are also benefitting from boosting their revenue, exports and productivity through Amazon Marketplace. There are over 10,000 small businesses and entrepreneurs using Amazon Marketplace to grow their sales online. Small businesses in the UK can also use the Fulfilment by Amazon service to ship to EU countries, reaching every Prime member in Europe. The businesses store their products in an Amazon fulfilment centre and Amazon handles the packing, shipping and customer service for orders so customers can enjoy the benefits of Prime One Day Delivery on an even wider selection of items.

New research published today by Rural England and Scotland’s Rural College (SRUC) commissioned by Amazon, as part of a research project to understand the growth potential of the UK’s rural digital economy, found that 80 per cent of exports from rural businesses use e-commerce, with their main trading destination being the EU (84 per cent), where people in nine EU countries are able to receive Prime one day delivery, followed by the U.S. (45 per cent). Small businesses and entrepreneurs across the UK exported more than £1.8bn in goods abroad through Amazon Marketplace last year alone.
